Baklava has a shelf-life of over 2 weeks if kept in the pantry. You’ll know that it’s coming near the end of its shelf life when it dries out. To prolong its shelf life, there are three ways to keep it fresh.

How To Store Baklava

Storing baked Baklava at room temperature

Remove the Baklava from your oven and place it into a wide, shallow, and uncovered container. Cooling is essential when the weather is rainy or humid. There are two things to keep in mind:

  • During the summer, cool the Baklava in the refrigerator immediately after baking it. It gives them time to cool before exposing it to room temperature conditions.
  • Do not store the Baklava at room temperature for over 5 days.

Place the Baklava in a pan, then cut it into squares or rectangles. Afterward, cut each piece diagonally to make triangular pieces. Pour your favorite syrup over the Baklava after cutting them. You can also wait until you are ready to eat them. Allow them to sit for 5 minutes before eating them.

If not, layer 4 to 6 pieces of Baklava with pieces of parchment paper. Place two pieces of Baklava onto the parchment paper. Then place another piece of parchment paper on top, then another 2 pieces on top.

Top off the batch with another 2 Baklava pieces, then place the last piece of parchment paper on top.

When doing, keep this in mind:

  • Limit the batches to 4 to 6 Baklava pieces so you don’t have to defrost all of them at once.
  • Always separate each layer with a piece of wax or parchment paper.

Once done, store your Baklava at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Make sure that the container is completely closed, then store it somewhere cool in the kitchen or the refrigerator. Test the Baklava regularly with a food thermometer. Ensure that it will not rise above room temperature.

Keep the baked Baklava at room temperature to maintain its crispy texture. Store the Baklava in the refrigerator if you want a chewy texture.

How to Freeze Unbaked Baklava

Line the baking pan with an equal cut piece of parchment paper. Gently, place the unbaked Baklava onto the pan, then make sure not to break it apart.

Optional:

  • If you do not have parchment paper, grease the baking pan with ½ to 1 tablespoon of olive oil.

Place the uncovered baking pan in the freezer, then check the Baklava every hour. Gently touch it with your finger to know if it is frozen. Once it is completely frozen lift it carefully and wrap it in 4 layers. Place the wrapped Baklava onto the pan and into the freezer, and it can last for up to 4 months.

Discard the parchment paper after removing the Baklava.

When you are about to cook the Baklava, remove it from the freezer and take off the wrap. Afterward, place it on the pan and put it in the refrigerator for 60 minutes. Or you may leave the Baklava on the counter at room temperature for about 1 hour to defrost it.

However, this is not suitable for areas with humid conditions.

After defrosting the Baklava, butter the sides and bottom of the pan using a cooking brush.

Then, place the Baklava onto the pan and brush the top with butter. Cut the Baklava into squares and rectangles, then cut across them diagonally to make triangles. To make the most of it, pour your syrup of choice over the Baklava after you remove it from the oven.

Let the Baklava sit for 5 minutes before eating it.

Storing Baked Baklava In The Freezer

Place all your Baklava in a shallow, wide container right after they get out of the oven. Afterward, place the uncovered container into the refrigerator to cool. If you put the Baklava into the freezer, it will decrease the temperature of other food items that can ruin the taste and texture of Baklava.

You can use a freezer-safe bag, just be careful that the Baklava does not get crushed by other foods in the fridge. Afterward, place 2 pieces at the bottom of the container.

Then place a layer of parchment paper on the top. Continue the process until the container is full and then top it off with the last piece of parchment paper. You may follow some of these tips below:

  • Keep the batches to 4 to 6 Baklava pieces as this allows you to defrost them in small batches instead of all at once.
  • Keep each layer separated with a piece of wax or parchment paper.

Once done, put the batch of Baklava into the freezer until you are ready to reheat them. Once you are about to eat them, place them in the refrigerator for up to 6 hours or overnight to defrost.

How Long Can Baklava Be Stored?

Baklava has an extensive shelf-life, where it can last for about 2 weeks or more if stored properly.

To keep them fresh, put them in an airtight container or room temperature. If you place them at room temperature, that will help preserve the crispiness. If you like them chewy and harder, you can put them in the refrigerator. Baklava contains unique moisture, making them prone to spoilage.

You’ll know they are near to their expiry date when they dry out.

How To Store Fresh Baklava?

To store freshly baked Baklava, allow it to cool down first, then wrap and freeze it. With this method, it can last for four months. Wrap it tightly in at least four layers of plastic wrap, then place it in a zip-top freezer bag. Place it in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 hours or overnight for best results.

Some people recommend wrapping it in small batches, so you don’t need to consume large space in the freezer.
